Deborah Kesten, MPH, and Larry Scherwitz, PhD are known for their pioneering and groundbreaking "enlightened diet" research, which revealed their comprehensive program for optimal eating; and in turn, an evidence-based program and approach to prevent, manage, or reverse overeating, overweight, and obesity, and related ailments-from heart disease and eating disorders to depression and diabetes. Their research has revealed that a Whole Person Nutrition relationship to food and eating featuring the Four Facets of Food--eating for biological, psychological, spiritual, and social nourishment--not only is likely to stop the progression of food-related health problems, but could actually halt and reverse them.
This result was demonstrated in a cross-sectional study they did, with data published in Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing in 2005, which recruited more than 5200 test subjects interested in optimal eating. Not only did participants who followed their Whole Person Nutrition, Enlightened Diet dietary guidelines fare better with respect to weight than those who did not follow the program, the more they ate the Whole Person Nutrition, Enlightened Diet way, the more likely they were to lose weight without traditional restrictive dieting, or already be at their optimal weight.
This discovery was notable not only because it revealed seven newly identified "7 eating styles" that are likely to decrease overeating, overweight, and obesity, but also because it proved that weight-loss success is not just about what you put into your body--it's also about how, why, where, and with whom you eat. Using the Enlightened Diet program, you can now create a personalized plan for achieving and maintaining your optimal weight while savoring the pleasures of every meal.
